SOUTH African Airways is to cut loss-making routes, following the appointment of new Chief Executive Officer Vuyani Jarana.

A start date for the new CEO has still to be decided. However, SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said last week the recovery strategy had been tabled in parliament and: “We have to carry on; we don’t have the luxury of time.”

Plans to trim the airline’s network were revealed in parliament earlier this month. SAA said it expected to save around R900-million per year from the identified network cuts. However, the new CEO will still face the continuing balancing act of commercial and political priorities.

The National Treasury is to announce other aspects of the recovery plan and financial interventions in October.
