CLUB Med has released new market-specific research and booking intelligence, which it plans to share with retail partners from this week, aimed at driving more ski and snow holiday sales in South Africa.

The South African Snow Holiday Report covers behaviours and trends and names top ski and winter holiday resorts in the Club Med network.

The brand said, although difficult to quantify the number of South Africans going on snow holidays, Club Med winter 2017 season sales were up 29 percent over 2016.

Snow resorts in the French Alps are the most popular with South Africans. May, June and July are when most holidaymakers are searching for a snow holiday, and Gauteng, Western Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal account for the highest number of search results, with 61 percent of research done over the telephone.

Olivier Hannaert, Club Med Southern Africa Managing Director, said the intention was to help educate more South Africans on snow holidays and to support retailers.

“This report provides information that is specifically relevant to South Africans and is something we are extremely excited to launch,” he said.

According to Mr. Hannaert, 60 percent of Club Med sales in South Africa come via the trade.

While snow holidays are typically for snow sport enthusiasts, they are becoming popular as an option for those looking for a wellness, health and relaxation retreat, Club Med maintained. Mr. Hannaert said: “That may sound surprising, but there is so much to do at a snow-filled destination than just ski or snowboard… shopping, indulging in the resort’s spa treatments, hopping on and off chairlifts to discover the best views of the region for the perfect Instagram picture, tobogganing, snowshoe walking, enjoying the Jacuzzi in the snow, or simply sitting at the fireplace with a good book with majestic mountains spread out in front of you – there is so much to offer everyone.”

• TIR will publish more results from Club Med’s first snow holidays report in September. TIR is available online from the 1st of each month at www.tir.co.za. For print subcriptions, email dominic@tir.co.za.
